Something is shifting in American culture, and you can measure it in jersey sales. Women athletes are standing up, speaking plainly about biological reality, and instead of getting torched by the perpetually offended, they’re being rewarded for it. Fans are showing up in droves. Merchandise is moving at a record pace. The free market is delivering its verdict – and it’s not the one the cultural gatekeepers were banking on.
Here’s what’s interesting. When a professional basketball player can articulate a common sense position on women’s sports more clearly than most elected officials in Washington, maybe the talent pipeline for conservative leadership runs through some unexpected locker rooms. As it turns out, a certain president noticed.
Trump said the Indiana Fever star is “beautiful” and “a lot of men [want] to go and watch her.”
Sophie Cunningham got a shoutout from President Donald Trump during a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday night.
“You’re not allowed to say that anymore, however, as a politician. Please, please, let me take it back. Anytime a politician says a woman is beautiful, that’s generally the end of his political career in the modern-day politic world,” Trump added.
The Youngstown crowd ate it up. Classic Trump – equal parts charm and defiance, daring anyone to clutch their pearls. He went on to note that Cunningham’s value to any roster extends well beyond the stat sheet. “You probably wouldn’t mind her on the team, not to help you with points, but to help you with attendance,” he said. “The attendance would be great.” Funny line. But Trump didn’t spotlight Cunningham at a packed Ohio rally just because she fills seats. He recognized what millions of Americans already understand. This woman has steel in her spine.
